The Ghost Peppers are done. Now what?

For the second time in three years, Gastonia’s ballpark has lost its team. Here’s why we think the next chapter should look different.

On September 30, 2026, the Gastonia Ghost Peppers announced they were ceasing operations after the 2026 season. Ownership described a strategic shift toward arena-based sports and entertainment. The Atlantic League and the City of Gastonia say they will look for a new team or operator for CaroMont Health Park.

If that sounds familiar, it should. Less than three years ago the Honey Hunters lost their place in the league over unpaid debts.

Here’s what we’re doing about it

  • Getting the inside story. We’re talking with people close to the situation to understand what really happened and what the City and league are looking for next.
  • Floating a better idea. Community ownership, so the people who love this team have a real stake in keeping it.
  • Counting heads. The strongest argument we can make is a long list of neighbors who want in.
